A Temperature Controlled Solution

According to Wine Business, FedEx is launching an overnight temperature controlled wine shipping service for wineries in Northern California covering 70 percent of the country, with delivery by 10:30 the next morning. The northern route will launch on April 1st, and the southern route on May 1st.

Temperature controlled trucks that maintain a steady 55 degrees will be used to ship to FedEx hubs. From the hubs, the wine will then go out for delivery via regular trucks early the following morning.

“We’ve heard from several customers their interest and desire to get a summer solution,” district sales manager Caroline Viger-Uu said. “We’ve found that summer shipping volumes drop about 50 percent in the summer so we thought it would be viable to come up with a shipment solution to continue shipping all year long.”

Pricing is still being fine-tuned, but will be available in a couple weeks.

A lack of temperature controlled shipping solutions has been a problem with wineries for several years, with many deferring shipping during the summer months because of fear that the temperature will ruin their wine.
