Over 5,000 wines were submitted to this year’s San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition, and St. Clair Gewurztraminer won ‘White Sweepstake Winner-Best of Class’ white wine. This is the highest possible award for white wines, meaning it is officially the best white wine in the nation. The Gewurztraminer is produced by Southwest Wines of Deming, New Mexico.

“We have always knows that New Mexico can stand out nationally and internationally in the production of high-quality wines,” said Phillippe Littot, the winemaker at Southwest Wines. “We are extremely honored to receive the very prestigious San Francisco Chronicle Wine Sweepstakes Award. I think many people will be pleasantly surprised by our Gewurztraminer and our other award-winning wines, too.”

Six other Southwest Wines labels were also recognized, with one bronze medal, three silvers, a gold, and another ‘Best of Class’ for one of the winery’s specialty wines.

St. Clair Gewurztraminer is a semi-sweet white wine noted for its tastes of ripe apricots and spice, with hints of green apple. It is described as medium-bodied with a long finish, is ideal as an apertif, and compliments fresh shellfish, toasted almonds, and spiced desserts.

The Gewurztraminer as well as other varieties are available from the company’s website at www.southwestwines.com.
