Like a Spanish Sauvignon Blanc

Javier Sanz, longtime producer of wines made from the Verdejo variety in Rueda, Spain is making its mark in the U.S. wine market. Its signature bottling sets the standard for the varietal with a flavor profile reminiscent of Sauvignon Blanc, but with more complexity and structure.

“Verdejo has a long history and is in fact the most popular white varietal sold in Spain,” says Yolanda Alonso, Export Manager at Javier Sanz. American wine drinkers are discovering the authentic old-world complexity of the varietal and its unique fit with fusion cuisine. “Javier Sanz has been making Verdejo wines for over 150 years but it’s just now being adopted in America. Crafted by our third-generation winemaker, it embodies tradition, yet screams discovery as a complement to not only traditional white wine dishes, but also with lamb and pork dishes commonly served in Rueda, a region just to the northwest of Madrid.”

What distinguishes the brand is that it combines authenticity and heritage, with a contemporary flavor profile that’s only just now being discovered and embraced by American consumers. “Some of the vineyards for our wine are over 150 years old and are grown as bush vines without traditional trellising. These grapes contribute complexity and structure to the bright and lively profile of Verdejo. And that’s what makes our wine so definitive of the varietal,” concludes Alonso.

Javier Sanz Verdejo is the best expression of Rueda and its terroir: youthful and bright, with light shades of green. In the nose, it shows fresh and lively varietal notes of sweet grapefruit, guava and pineapple combined with mineral, anise and fennel as well as floral aromas. Bone-dry in the palate, its medium body is coupled with a crisp, refreshing acidity that makes it enjoyable on its own as well as paired with dishes ranging from seafood to Asian Fusion.

For consumers looking for new and exciting wine experiences, Javier Sanz Verdejo represents a fabulous choice.

Javier Sanz Verdejo is distributed in Connecticut, New Jersey and New York through T. Edward Wines, and in California via Beaune Imports.

With a history dating back to 1863, Javier Sanz Viticultor’s philosophy is based on the conservation of pre-phylloxera vineyards, local grape varieties, and the recovery of varieties that have almost become extinct. Its wine culture is made up of four generations of winemakers who, for almost two centuries, have continued the tradition. Javier Sanz’s vineyards are laid out in a mosaic of plots, farms and small vineyards, all within the Valladolid municipality of La Seca in the Rueda region of Spain.
