An exclusive bottle of vintage 1890 Cherry Heering, considered to be the original cherry liqueur, will be auctioned off for the first time in history at the international auction house Sotheby’s on December 6th. The original bottle can also be found and bid on online at Charitybuzz.com lot #253504. While the exact value of the rare liqueur is unknown, it is estimated to be worth over $100,000.

The 1890 vintage was uncovered in the Heering cellars in Denmark where it had been aged since production more than 120 years ago. A few bottles were found in the cellars, perfectly preserved in their original casks, hand packed in wooden casings, and marked with the original Royal Arms as purveyors to The Royal Danish and Imperial Russian courts, as well as the Prince of Wales.

In May, a tasting was done at The Campbell Apartment in New York to test the quality of the liqueur by some of the industry’s experts. The rating was based on five factors including mouth feel, stretch on the palette, degree of sweetness, post resonance, and overall balance. The vintage was in perfect condition, prompting the Sotheby’s auction.

“This vintage is really well kept, providing notes of chocolate and cigar-as if they really rolled everything into the whole spirit,” said panelist Tony Abu Ganim. “I was eager to see how long it can be aged and still maintain a refined taste. It is deep, more rounded, more impactful—this is my favorite.”

The proceeds from the auction will benefit the charity DIFFA, Design Industries Foundation Fighting Aids. Fashion has been the communication platform for the Cherry Heering brand for a while, and this is a good opportunity for them to give back.
