Cicerone Certification Program

From bartenders to beverage managers, people who work with beer now have a way to demonstrate their expertise in the wide world of quality brews. The Cicerone Certification Program provides professional credentials for people working with quality beer in the beverage and hospitality industries. Through a series of exams, the program certifies expertise at various levels starting with “Certified Beer Server” and progressing to Master Cicerone™.ciceronebeer.gif

At the first level, folks like bartenders, wait staff, retail store clerks and others who discuss beer with consumers can demonstrate their understanding of beer and beer service by becoming a Certified Beer Server through a short, web-based exam.

Those who want to demonstrate an expert mastery of beer in all its aspects can earn the title of Master Cicerone™. This title designates someone with in-depth knowledge and highly attuned tasting skills.

The Cicerone Certification Program was launched in 2008 by Ray Daniels (pictured), president of the Craft Beer Institute, Chicago. Based on his extensive work in the craft beer industry, Daniels saw a need for a professional certification similar to the wine world’s “sommelier” designation.

The Cicerone Certification Program assesses knowledge in five areas:
a. Beer Storage, Sales and Service
b. Beer Styles and Culture
c. Beer Tasting and Flavors
d. Brewing Ingredients and Processes
e. Pairing Beer with Food

A complete syllabus of the knowledge tested by the program can be found on the program website along with a fun 10-question sample exam and other resources.

As of May 1, more than 450 people had become Certified Beer Servers through the 60-question online exam. More than 60 have gone on to take the in-person Certified Cicerone exam.
