U.S. attendees at this year’s ProWein, International Trade Fair Wines and Spirits taking place from March 23 – 25, 2014 in Düsseldorf, Germany will see a uniquely broad range of exhibitors: up to 4,800 exhibitors from 50 countries will show their portfolio. Not only the classic wine producing nations but also newcomers on the international wine market present themselves and all international market leaders will be featured. Many of these exhibitors have unique products with little to no current presence in the U.S. and represent an opportunity to look for innovative products that can offer a competitive advantage.
Country of Origin: Global warming is having a significant impact on traditional wine production. Couple that with the vines adaptability, it’s no surprise we’re seeing the expansion of wine producing countries beyond the familiar few. A spectacular red — Kalecik Karasi — from Turkey, deeply colored Xinomavro from Greece and Assyrtiko from the island of Santorini in Greece are some of the varieties gaining traction in the US. Spirits: With much of the attention in the US market focused on flavors in vodka and whiskies, a visit to the Spirits Hall 7a at ProWein will be a real eye opener with so many brands offering both innovation and heritage. Marc Brandies, Calvados, liqueurs, cordials and many products that simply don’t fit into recognized categories (Singani anyone?) are on display supported by the “FIZZZ Lounge” which brings mixology and showmanship to the show floor.
Sparkling Wines: The growth of Prosecco has triggered new attention on sparklers for everyday consumption. Cavas from Spain, Espumantes from Portugal, Spumantes form Italy Sekt from Germany, Crémants from France or even Pezsgō from Hungary represent variations on a theme that rarely makes it across the pond. Looking for the next breakout sparkler, plan a visit to ProWein.
Glassware: Austria is home to many of the most well recognized names including Riedel, Stolzle and Zwiesel, but visitors will also find producers of competitive restaurant grade glassware offering extraordinary quality at attractive prices.
