Wyoming Whiskey Barrel Strength Bourbon

Wyoming Whiskey has released its first-ever Barrel Strength Bourbon this month. Ten gallons of 116-proof and twelve gallons of 120-proof bourbon sold out before it could even hit shelves.

Retailing for $199 in a paperless, minimalist bottle with enamel labeling, a grand total of 111 bottles were produced. Of those, 96 were made available for sale. The Barrel Strength Bourbon was selected for its excellence by Wyoming Whiskey distiller Sam Mead, with the support of industry specialist Nancy Fraley.

“As soon as Nancy came out to taste with us, it was apparent that we had different tiers of whiskeys. We have our Small Batch, we’ve got our Single Barrel, and then we have our Barrel Strength—our truly exceptional barrels,” said Wyoming Whiskey head distiller and 5th generation Wyoming rancher, Sam Mead. “These two barrels started as very good barrels and then they started to leak, significantly. This accelerated the oxidation process and turned them into very special barrels.”

The extremely limited Wyoming Whiskey Barrel Strength bourbon boasted a glowing review by The Whiskey Cast’s Mark Gillespie in episode 553 on Sept. 19. The time stamp of his Barrel Strength tasting notes is from 49:00 to 51:00 minutes.

“It’s an amazingly complex whiskey and it isn’t just one of the best bourbons I’ve tasted in a long time, it’s one of the best whiskeys, period,” said Mark Gillespie, ‎Cask-Strength Multimedia Producer and Journalist. “I am scoring Wyoming Whiskey Barrel Strength a 97 [out of 100].”

According to Gillespie, Wyoming Whiskey Barrel Strength is intense but buttery smooth with a nice oakiness and notes of turbinado sugar, orange blossom honey, caramel candy, fudge with muted touches of clove, nutmeg and anise. A hint of smoke brings everything together.

Wyoming Whiskey is also releasing two pallets of Single Barrel Bourbon that represents the top 1% of barrels from their three warehouses.  The Single Barrel has won numerous medals from international and craft spirits competitions and sells out almost immediately.  It will be allocated to a number of select markets across the country.
