The Beer Institute Taps Two New Board Members

WASHINGTON, DC – The Beer Institute’s Board of Directors announced today the election of Harpoon Brewery co-founder Richard Doyle, chairman of the nation’s premier craft brewer trade association, and Dolf van den Brink, President of Heineken USA, as its newest members. Doyle succeeds Brooklyn Brewery founder, Steve Hindy, who was the first small brewer to serve on the BI Board. Van den Brink replaces outgoing director Don Blaustein.

“The Beer Institute (BI) is committed to working with large and smaller brewers on the important political and policy issues the industry faces every day,” said Tom Long, president and chief commercial officer of MillerCoors and chairman of the Beer Institute. “We thank Steve Hindy for his great service on the board and his efforts to ensure other small brewers have the opportunity to serve the industry in this capacity.”

Dave Peacock, Vice Chairman of the BI Board of Directors added, “Rich Doyle and Dolf van den Brink bring knowledgeable perspectives to the highest levels of the Beer Institute while representing brewers of all sizes. Their experience, leadership and commitment to the beer industry will play a key role in guiding our efforts as we seek to make sound public policy decisions for the benefit of consumers and all the players in our diverse industry.” A graduate of Harvard Business School, Doyle co-founded The Harpoon Brewery in 1986. He has been an integral part of the brewery’s success, which included a place on Inc. Magazine’s list of the 500 fastest growing companies in America in 1996 and 1997. “I am honored to serve on the Beer Institute’s Board of Directors and will continue the important work Steve Hindy began to solidify the bridge between small and large brewers,” said Doyle.

A native of The Netherlands, Dolf van den Brink was appointed President and Chief Executive Officer of Heineken USA in October 2009. He joined the company following a successful four-year tenure as the Commercial Director and Deputy General Manager of Bralima, Heineken’s subsidiary in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Under his management, the company became one of the fastest growing business units within Heineken.

“Whether large or small, brewers, importers, distributors, and everyone else who is involved in the production, distribution or sale of our products help contribute to the strength and vitality of our industry. It is critically important to the future success of this industry that we come together with one voice across all sectors of the beer business to address legislative, legal, and public affairs issues,” said van den Brink.
