Chicago-based internet startup Shiftgig (www.shiftgig.com) announced today it raised over $7,000 through its Shift Some Help campaign to provide food for New York City service industry businesses and workers that were affected by Superstorm Sandy.

The Shift Some Help campaign kicked off with a raucous event held at Hard Rock Chicago on November 27, headlined by Marty Casey and Lovehammers, and drew over four hundred members of Chicago’s service industry community, from bartenders to servers to kitchen managers to chefs. The event was co-sponsored by the Wirtz Beverage Group, and photos can be viewed at https://www.facebook.com/shiftgig/photos_albums.

The proceeds of the event and a subsequent national online donation campaign raised a total of $7,060. The majority of the funds have been donated to City Harvest, a New York-based nonprofit dedicated to feeding New York’s hungry men, women and children.

“As Sandy’s impact continues to affect our colleagues in New York and New Jersey, we felt it was important that we find a way to organize our community to provide some relief,” said Eddie Lou, CEO of Shiftgig. “We’re proud to partner with an organization such as City Harvest that continues to provide significant help to those who need it most.”

Many people are still greatly affected by the impact of Sandy. Those interested in providing financial support can still donate online at https://giving.cityharvest.org/shiftgig.

“City Harvest is working hard to put meals on the table for the hungry men, women and children who rely on us every day, while supporting New Yorkers who were impacted by Hurricane Sandy,” said Robyn Stein, Director of Corporate Partnerships for City Harvest. “With the demand for emergency food increasing, City Harvest is thankful to be receiving this generous donation from Shiftgig and its community, which will help us fill our trucks and deliver more than 125,000 pounds of food a week to our hungry neighbors.”
