Los Angeles Goes Back to the Basics

Clear Spirit Trend Hitting the West Coast

It seems that drinking trends are always in flux, and luckily Aidan Demarest and Marcos Tello of the cocktail consulting firm Tello/Demarest Liquid Assets are ahead of the game on this one. Clear spirits are becoming more popular than ever in Los Angeles venues and it’s sure to spread nationwide, according to the LA Times.

Tello told the Times, “It’s a delicate dance with these clear spirits. You can bury them by hitting them with a lot of citrus and sugar, but you’re a better bartender if you know how to play up their flavor and texture.” Demarest agreed, and prefers to serve the spirit at his bar in Glendale neatly.

Vodka neat, however, is not everyone’s preference; so mixologists are working hard to keep their cocktails just as crisp with minimal ingredients to keep it light. For example, mixologist Lacey Murillo, combines barrel-aged Bols Genever, Carpano Antica and Green Chartreuse and garnishes it with a candied Campari chip, according to the LA Times.

With summertime approaching, clear spirits will certainly beat out darker liquors for end-of-day refreshers but the average vodka cranberry consumers will most likely have to adjust their preferences if they want to hop on this clear spirit heavy bandwagon.
