Yesterday evening, three competitors faced off at NYC’s Pouring Ribbons at the first-ever PAMALYMPICS. Competitors James Menite, Joshua Perez and Doug Miller underwent three challenge rounds in front of a panel of judges and a crowd of fans to determine the winner. In the end, Joshua Perez of Booker & Dax took home the Gold and $5,000 as the top PAMAlympian. In addition, PAMA Pomegranate Liqueur made a donation of $1,500 to the New York Chapter of the US Bartender’s Guild’s Hurricane Sandy relief fund, which helps clean up and restore local bars in the storm’s aftermath.

The PAMALYMPICS is a bartending competition hosted by the USBGNY and sponsored by PAMA that sought a bartender who exemplified keen taste buds, out of the box creativity and ability to draw a crowd of fans. The judging panel was comprised of Eben Freeman (PAMA Brand Spokesperson and Director of Bar Operations and Innovation, Altamarea Group), MaryCrae Guild (PAMA Associate Brand Manager) and Brian Quinn (FoodRepublic.com Cocktail Columnist). Each competitor left with a monetary prize: Silver medalist Doug Miller of the Culinary Institute of America received $2,000 and Bronze medalist James Menite of Crown Restaurant received $1,000.

Joshua’s recipe, which qualified him to compete in The PAMALYMPICS, was the PAMA-Cho-Bana:
Ingredients:
1 oz. PAMA Pomegranate Liqueur
1 oz. Bourbon
1 oz. Honey
1 oz. Chobani Greek Yogurt, whipped
Finely Ground Fennel, for garnish

Directions: Stir PAMA, bourbon and honey in a mixing glass with ice for approximately 15-20 seconds. Strain into a chilled coupe glass. Float whipped Chobani Greek Yogurt on top and garnish with a dash of finely ground fennel.

In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, PAMA pledged to make a donation of $20 per attendee to the USBGNY’s efforts to help local bars re-open. “With the storm’s impact on the industry, we felt it was a natural progression to add a charity component to the event, which celebrates the art of bartending,” said MaryCrae Guild, PAMA Associate Brand Manager. The USBGNY fund will purchase cleaning supplies and bar equipment such as ice machines and water heaters for affected establishments.
