Beer Fest Raises $35K for Homeless Youth

More than 600 beer enthusiasts gathered at the Leftbank Annex on Saturday, September 6 for the third annual Brews for New Avenues. Organized for a city that lives, eat, breathes and (of course) drinks craft beer, this year’s event brought some of the world’s rarest bottles to Portland as well as unique kegs of beer never before debuted on the west coast. Through live and silent auctions, ticket sales and proceeds from the “Wall of Beer,” attendees channeled their passion for craft beer into raising more than $35,000 for New Avenues for Youth’s programs for local foster, at-risk and homeless youth.

“The Portland beer community, along with breweries and private collectors from around the world, have really championed this event and the great cause behind it,” says Sean Suib, Executive Director at New Avenues for Youth. “Thanks to all the donated kegs, bottles and the beer enthusiasts who attended and generously bid today, we’ll be able to make a positive difference in the lives of our city’s most vulnerable youth.”

The highest bid of the night was $1,800 for a Cantillon Gueuzestraminer donated by Cantillon Brewery , Brussels, Belgium.

Now in its third year, Brews for New Avenues is a nonprofit rare-beer event put on by New Avenues for Youth. The event features Portland’s only live auction of rare beers, as well as a “Wall of Beer,” chocolate stout floats, and kegs on tap from over thirty international and domestic breweries. Beers for the auction are procured year-long by three devout beer enthusiasts on New Avenues for Youth’s Ambassador Board: James Bruce, Jeremy Herrig, and Don Lowman. All proceeds go to New Avenues for Youth. More info at www.brewsfornewavenues.org.
